This is not surprising taking into account that both proteases differ only in 12 amino acids. Here, we discover that the main protease of SARS CoV-2 is topologically very similar to that of the SARS CoV-1. This enzyme is essential for the virus due to its proteolytic processing of polyproteins. The main protease of the new coronavirus SARS CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) represents one of the most important targets for the antiviral pharmacological actions against COVID-19.
