Additionally, if you combine dual casting and impact, most enemies can never even touch you.
E.g Frost is good for keeping melee enemies at bay, and shock for mages and dragons. Each destruction element is well catered to different varieties of enemies in the game, for instance. On the contrary, as someone who is currently on a destruction-based playthrough on Legendary difficulty, destruction magic is extremely useful once you reach higher levels of the skill.
